The Timeless Story Behind “Lorem Ipsum” — More Than Just Dummy Text
A Little History
“Lorem Ipsum” isn’t just random gibberish. Its roots go all the way back to the 16th century, when an unknown printer scrambled a passage from Cicero’s “De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum” (“The Extremes of Good and Evil”), a philosophical work written in 45 BC. The printer used the text as a placeholder to demonstrate typography, long before digital design even existed.
Why Designers Still Use It
If you’re on your own, take the corset from the bottom of each side and start fastening the notches from the bottom up. If you’re accompanied, ask the person to help you: she’ll take the corset at the bottom, and pull hard to close it. You grab the corset in the middle, and pull hard too. She can then fasten the notches on the way up.
The Psychology Behind Placeholder Text
Meaningful content naturally draws our attention. When real words are used, our brains start reading and interpreting them, which can distract from the intended focus — the design itself. “Lorem Ipsum” solves this by being readable enough to look like natural language, but nonsensical enough not to demand interpretation.

Over time, many versions of Lorem Ipsum have emerged — from “Cupcake Ipsum” to “Bacon Ipsum” — humorous takes used by developers to lighten the mood in mockups. Despite these playful updates, the original text remains the gold standard for placeholder content across the web and print media.
